Training the Best was written by Dorothy Poole and captures the story of Charles Herbert Flowers Jr., a primary flight instructor at Tuskegee Army Air Field from 1942 through 1945. Charles Herbert Flowers Jr. was a graduate of the third class, Class 42 F, at Tuskegee Army Air Field. He was one of the first thirteen Tuskegee Airmen to become a pilot. Mr. Flowers became a full time flight instructor, a primary flight instructor who transformed cadets into pilots. He trained roughly ten percent of the 996 pilots who were produced at Tuskegee Army Air Field.

Curtis Robinson, the subject of A Pilot’s Journey, was a graduate of Class 43D at Tuskegee Army Airfield. He had 33 combat missions in Anzio, Italy in 1943 and '44. Then he became a flight instructor. Mr. Robinson who passed away in October 2009, was a member of a family that produced three military officers and a staff sergeant who served during World War II - he plus three of his brothers.
